Digital Tools Empowering Rural Education, Enhancing Educational Equity: Prof. Asha S. Kanwar Visited Primary and Secondary Schools in Ziyun, Guizhou

On June 19, 2024, Professor Asha S. Kanwar, Chair of the Governing Board of the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education, former President and CEO of the Commonwealth of Learning, and Chair Professor at the Smart Learning Institute of Beijing Normal University, together with Dr. Zeng Haijun, Vice Dean of the Smart Learning Institute of Beijing Normal University, representatives from China Education Daily, and Aliyun Education, visited Daying Hope Primary School and Daying Middle School in Ziyun County, Anshun City, Guizhou Province. The visit aimed to investigate how rural schools are utilizing digital tools to innovate educational practices.

In the Cloud Classroom of Daying Hope Primary School and Daying Middle School, Prof. Kanwar and her team participated in AI art classes and architectural design interest groups, engaging directly with the students. The cloud classroom model facilitates remote collaboration between online volunteers and local teachers, guiding students in using cloud-based intelligent tools for learning and practice. This innovative approach provides children in rural areas with access to the same educational resources as their urban peers, thereby promoting educational equity.
During her visit, Prof. Kanwar’s warm interaction with the students left a lasting impression. Her encouraging words, highlighting the students' pivotal role in shaping the future technological world, instilled a sense of hope and determination. She urged the students to maintain their imagination, study hard, continually enhance their digital literacy, and prepare for the competitive digital era. This personal touch from a respected figure in the field of education is a powerful motivator for the students and a promising sign for the future of digital education in rural areas.
Prof. Kanwar also reviewed the core curriculum and toured cultural corridors, libraries, sports fields, and other facilities to assess the construction and utilization of various school resources. She provides insightful views on the development of digital teaching in schools, the effective use of open educational resources, and the enhancement of teachers’ digital literacy.
