From 19 to 20, August, 2023, the final review and award ceremony for primary and secondary school teachers in the 6th Global Competition on Design for Future Education were successfully held. The primary and secondary school teacher track of this competition included two activities, Case-study Collection and Call for Videos with a theme of 5-Minute Mini Lesson on Knowledge Points in K12. Since its launch on March 1, 2023, this competition has attracted over 2,000 primary and secondary school teachers who submitted more than 1,500 works individually or in teams. During the competition, the organizing committee held numerous promotional and training events, inviting experts and scholars in the field of educational design to provide lectures on relevant knowledge and offer targeted guidance and feedback on the submitted case-studies.
After multiple rounds of expert evaluations, a total of 30 videos were awarded in the activity of Call for Videos. 78 case-studies advanced to the finals, including 11 first prizes, 24 second prizes, and 43 third prizes.
Final Review of Case-study Collection
On August 19, 2023, the final review of Case-study Collection for primary and secondary school teachers took place at Changping Campus, Beijing Normal University. Twenty teachers delivered excellent presentations. Based on the competition's assessment criteria, including problem awareness, innovation spirit, science and education integration, social responsibility, presentation and expression, the judges provided professional and detailed feedback on the 20 case-studies.
Ms. Wang Zhuzhu, Former Director of National Center for Educational Technology, China, emphasized the importance of clearly defining goals and expected outcomes in educational design. Regarding the promotion of inclusive education, she pointed out that there was a significant gap between the "should be" state and the "actual" state. It is necessary to fully consider the needs of students of all kinds to ensure that educational practices are truly fair and effective.
Mr. Shi Jianguo, Executive Vice Dean of China Educational Equipment Research Institute, China, pointed out that the presented case-studies had many highlights in terms of design thinking, the integration with education, innovation, and promotional value. However, it needs further exploration and discussion in areas such as problem focusing, the relationship between technology and teaching, and the clarity of innovation points.
Ms. Lin Junfen, Vice Dean of Guangdong Academy of Basic Education and Information Technology, China stated that these case-studies showcased the innovative methods, technologies, and models in problem-solving process, highlighting the characteristics of learning theory, iteration and engineering thinking. In addition, the selected case-studies focused on how education helped to improve the quality of life, emphasizing interdisciplinary thinking and the role of teachers and students in assuming social responsibilities, which reflected the trends and prospects of future education.
Ms. Wang Su, Director of Research Center for International Comparative Education, China National Academy of Educational Sciences, China, emphasized the indispensable nature of technology empowerment in future education. Although the case-studies covered various technology-empowered aspects, such as resources, teacher training and teaching tools, it still needs further exploration in the application of technology, especially in the field of special education, particularly autism.
Mr. Wang Yunwu, Professor of School of Smart Education, Jiangsu Normal University, China, advocated for the integration of technology and interdisciplinary content to promote interdisciplinary learning and enhance innovative capabilities. Furthermore, he suggested optimizing curriculum design and developing school-based curriculum with local features to better meet the needs of students.
The Award Ceremony of Case-study Collection
On August 20, 2023, the Award Ceremony of Case-study Collection for primary and secondary school teachers took place at 2023 Global Smart Education Conference Forum on Teacher Digital Competences and Innovative Talent Cultivation Model. Mr. Chen Guangju, Chairman of the Competition Steering Committee, Vice Director of School Affairs Committee of BNU, announced the final results.
Mr. Ren Youqun, Director of the Department of Teacher Education, Chinese Ministry of Education and Mr. Zhan Tao, Director of UNESCO IITE presented awards to the winning primary and secondary school teachers.
