As an exploration of interactive electronic readers, the “Interactive Book” helps young people, especially teenagers aged 9 to 15 understand the application and theories of artificial intelligence through lively and interesting stories as well as immediate communication. They can learn and try to use simple artificial intelligence codes, experience the fun of using artificial intelligence to solve practical problems, and stimulate their interest to further study artificial intelligence. The book is jointly developed by the Smart Learning Institute of Beijing Normal University, the University of Memphis from the United States, and Tianjin University. Many experts at home and abroad provided support for this reader.

Artificial intelligence technology is increasingly getting popular in different fields such as education, medical care, and finance. China and many countries and regions around the world have tried using intelligent robots, big data and other technologies for the prevention and control of the pandemic. Popularizing artificial intelligence in basic education to improve students’ computational thinking and design thinking skills helps improve their information technology literacy, discover and cultivate artificial intelligence talents, and promote the development of smart education and smart society. Introducing young people to the application of artificial intelligence during COVID-19 will attract more young people to pay attention to and study artificial intelligence, and jointly explore the diverse possibilities of intelligent technology in special circumstances.

The “Interactive Book” is organized in accordance with the five concepts of artificial intelligence developed by the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) for K-12 students, namely perception, representation and reasoning, learning, natural interaction, and social influence, focusing on the application of artificial intelligence in the prevention and control of the pandemic and introducing AI-based anti-pandemic solutions.

Zhuang Rongxia, Associate Professor from Beijing Normal University, believed that the “Interactive Reader” allowed young people to systematically understand the important role of artificial intelligence in pandemic prevention and control, understand its key technologies and applications and enhance young readers’ interest and ability to use artificial intelligence to solve practical problems.

“Interactive Reader” integrates the interactive development environment JupyterHub and showcases the artificial intelligence case code where readers can test, modify and download the content and code in the interactive mode. By practicing through the “Interactive Reader”, the readers can deepen their understanding of the related knowledge and technology of artificial intelligence.

Professor Hu Enxiang from the University of Memphis in the United States believed that in the era of artificial intelligence, it was vital to prepare the younger generation for a challenging future. The “Interactive Reader” is an exploration of the future textbook as well as an experiment of the teaching model which is featured by its combination of “artificial intelligence plus education”.

Youth AI education is highly valued by governments and educators in many countries. Beijing Normal University launched the "Adolescent Artificial Intelligence Innovation Program" (Yuanzhuo Program) in 2019 which aims to explore the cooperation mechanism among the government, universities and enterprises and gather the resources from different components of the society. The program hopes to inspire young people to use self-invented algorithms to solve real and complex problems, cultivate a group of internationally competitive high-end IT talents and teachers, and promote youth information literacy by providing multiple approaches and resources. The “Yuanzhuo Program” serves the country, instructs teachers, and trains students in the manner of public services, helping our country become the world’s major center of artificial intelligence innovation. The release of “Interactive Book on Artificial Intelligence to Combat Pandemics: Vivid Stories in Prevention and Control of COVID-19” will contribute to the implementation of the “Yuanzhuo Program”.
