The International Seminar on Artificial Intelligence Education in Arabian Countries was held by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) in its headquarters in Tunisia from May 23rd to 24th.
Held both online and offline, the seminar focused on AI-empowered education and aimed to promote its development by providing a dialogue platform for experts, scholars, policymakers and enterprises. Participants of the seminar include ALECSO’s Director-general Professor Mohamed Ould Amar, Tunisia’s Minister of Education and chairman of the National Commission of Tunisia for UNESCO Dr Mohamed Ali Boughdiri, Syria’s Minister of Education Dr Darem Tabaa, and representatives from Tunisia’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Department at ALECSO. Representatives from UNESCO, experts and scholars of many countries, enterprises and higher educational institutions in the Arab region also participated in the seminar and discussed relevant issues. Professor Huang Ronghuai, the leader of the UNESCO Chair on Artificial Intelligence in Education and co-Director of the Smart Learning Institute of Beijing Normal University (SLIBNU), was also invited.

During the seminar, Professor Huang had a panel discussion with Professor Mohamed Ould Amar, Dr Mohamed Ali Boughdiri and Professor Mohamed Jemni on future cooperation in the field of AI education.
Professor Huang Ronghuai delivered a keynote speech
In the sub-forum on human-machine cooperative teaching, Professor Huang delivered a keynote speech titled How We Learn and Teach with AI: The Mechanisms of Human-machine Collaboration in Future Education. Taking SLIBNU’s research result on ChatGPT and report on educational robots as examples, Professor Huang pointed out the pros and cons of applying AI in education and emphasized the importance of further exploration of human-machine cooperative teaching mechanisms. He raised the iSTAR research framework and called for the joint efforts of experts, teachers, enterprises and policymakers of all countries.

In the meeting hall, Ms Tang Yu, the first AI-powered virtual humanoid robot Rotating CEO of China’s NetDragon Websoft Holdings Limited, had an interactive session with over 50 primary and middle school students from Tunisia. She introduced their company’s progress on digital education and encouraged students to learn more about AI. Her topic aroused positive responses and her interaction with students received special attention from Minister Darem Tabaa.
Mr. Tingwen Chang, the assistant to the dean of SLIBNU, and Associate Professor Ahmed Tlili were invited to preside over the sub-forum and give an academic report.
