Around 50 per cent adivasi students in Jambul village do not have phones. While the digital divide is posing a serious problem to the education of scores of children who cannot access online education during the pandemic, a teacher from Kalyan came up with a system of buddy-pairs for sharing devices to ensure that no student was left out.
“With over 50 per cent of students not attending classes it was a huge concern. I decided to pair a student who has a phone with another student who does not have a phone. The student who doesn’t have a device has to go to the house of his classmate with whom he or she has been paired to attend the online class.” Mahajan told Mirror.
While this arrangement took care of the problem, there still remained a handful of students who could not be paired with anyone. “There were about three of four of them. For their benefit, I have asked the other students in the class to pay them a visit at their convenience and teach them what was taught in the online class. Communicating what they learnt to their classmate can also help them learn better,” he said.
Mahajan, who lives 2 km away from the school also visits the houses of these students once a week to check their notebooks and address their doubts.
Asmita Madan Ayarekar, a class 10 student who did not have phone has been going to her friend’s place for the last three months from 7.30 am to 9 am. “My friend stats two houses away. We sit together and study,” she told Mirror.
While the pairings were formed for English subject, the students now follow it even for other subjects.
