Many Portuguese students in the UK returned to Portugal during the confinement and many researchers saw projects suspended and were put into layoff due to the covid-19 pandemic, said the president of the Parsuk association, Márcia Costa.
"Some of the students had their classes cancelled and many returned to Portugal during this period. Some researchers were left with projects suspended and in 'furlough' (a suspended employment contract)," he told the agency Lusa.
The confinement decreed by the UK Government on 23 March led to the closure of universities and associated research laboratories, leading to the suspension of face-to-face classes and scientific work.
Most universities have provided classes and materials over the Internet, while many researchers have had their contracts suspended and have been put into layoff under the scheme set up by the government, which covers the payment of 80% of salaries up to £2,500 per month.
On the other hand, during this time, many Portuguese involved in medicine and scientific research took part in the treatment of patients infected with the new coronavirus and in the study of the disease. Parsuk has been promoting the work of these students and has also sought to maintain social contact with members in initiatives such as film viewing and discussion.
June 20th, is the 13th edition of Luso, the annual meeting where dozens of members normally gather to exchange personal and professional experiences and discuss issues relevant to their careers. Due to the rules of social distancing and restrictions in force, the event will be held in virtual mode, with a reduced program.
The five winning projects for research grants to promote mobility between Portugal and the UK will be announced, following the protocol signed last year between Parsuk and FCT(Foundation for Science and Technology).
"Although virtual events have the great advantage that more people can attend, for researchers face-to-face conferences are extremely important because they facilitate not only contact with speakers, but also among participants," said the president of Parsuk.
