Children’s behaviour has got worse under lockdown with a rise in temper tantrums and arguments, an Oxford University study has found.
Primary school pupils have been growing increasingly unhappy and worried while they have been stuck at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to researchers.
Youngsters aged between four and ten are suffering increasing emotional difficulties as lockdown progresses as well as experiencing some physical symptoms linked to worry, they found. There has also been a rise in children disobeying their parents and failing to do as they have been told, as well as difficulties in attention and restlessness.
Meanwhile, parents of secondary school pupils reported a reduction in their child's emotional difficulties, but an increase in restless and attention behaviours.
This research suggests that many younger children have found it increasingly hard to cope as the lockdown period has gone on, which may be because of loneliness, fears about the coronavirus or a loss of the routines and support that come with school.
