The Telegraph:When will British schools reopen?

The school will reopen from June 1st, starting with some primary schools. The secondary plan is still unclear. Boris Johnson has shown that the process of returning to school is gradual, rather than a wholesale lifting of the lock down.
Since March 20, the school has been completely closed, which is an unprecedented situation. The GCSE and A-level exams will not be conducted. Instead, students will be evaluated based on simulated data, personal assessments and previous achievements at the end of July. Many people question the accuracy of this method. Under the grim economic outlook, ministers have expressed the hope that students would return to school on May 11, and the schools said that this will not be possible as early as June 1.
Boris Johnson announced that primary schools will reopen in stages since June 1, followed by some middle schools, but he said that this is a "conditional plan" and subject to change. However, on May 20, a week and a half before the school is about to open, the Justice Secretary admitted that there were differences in the opinions regarding the reopening of the school. Robert Buckland said that ”a uniform start from June 1 is unlikely”, with at least 11 councils now refusing to open schools on the date set by the Prime Minister. He told the BBC that the government was committed to the date, but there may be “issues” from employers that “might will mean we don’t see a uniform approach from 1 June.”
Ministers had earlier asked the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) to look again at whether people need to stay so far apart, amid growing evidence that coronavirus does not transmit well in the air. And the National Education Union (NEU) had earlier written to ministers asking to see the government's evidence on the impact of re-opening schools. It warned that acting too early would likely result in an “increased risk” to staff and children, and could “undermine people's resolve to stick to social isolation”.
However, the UK ’s biggest union, NEU, has told its members not to “engage” with plans to reopen on June 1. The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers has threatened local councils with legal action if teachers who refuse to work are penalised.
Maintaining social distancing remains the biggest challenge. “We are considered to be the strictest school in Britain and even we would find it impossible,” Katharine Birbalsingh, head of the Michaela school in Brent, North West London said earlier this month.
Year 1 and Year 6 would be the first to return. Their resumption of classes is considered "to bring huge social benefits." The government encourages the children of vulnerable children and workers to return to school. In the UK, the death rate and infection rate of coronavirus are controversial, but it is obvious that the proportion of healthy children contracted the virus is much lower than that of the elderly or children with compromised immune systems.
