The 2019 UNESCO King Hamid bin Isa Al Khalifa Education Informatization Award will be awarded to the Letus Writing Skills Project in Brazil and the Dytective Dyslexia Detection Tool in Spain. Each winner will receive a prize of USD 25,000, and the specific date of the award ceremony will be determined within a few weeks.
The selection theme of the award in 2019 is the use of artificial intelligence to revolutionize education, teaching and learning. Through this theme, UNESCO hopes to promote the effective and ethical application of artificial intelligence in universal education.
The Letrus Writing Skills project developed by Brazil ’s Letrus Company is an artificial intelligence-driven program that provides automatic feedback for students ’writing skills. Letrus aims to reduce functional illiteracy among Portuguese speakers by increasing the writing opportunities of middle school students and teachers. The project combines artificial intelligence and artificial feedback to improve students' writing skills. The software can identify students' writing patterns and provide them with instant feedback, after which professional assessors will provide more specific guidance. Since 2017, more than 65,000 students in 26 Brazilian states have benefited from the project.
Dytective, developed by the Spanish company Change Dyslexia, is a tool that can detect dyslexia in Spanish users in about 15 minutes, and provides game-like exercises for learners with dyslexia to help them overcome writing and reading difficulties. The application combines online game testing and the associated predictive machine learning application. To date, more than 270,000 children from 43 countries have received free pre-diagnosis of dyslexia under the program. The company also provides financial assistance to vulnerable families whose children need correction education for dyslexia.
The two winners were selected from 113 nominations submitted by the governments and cooperative organizations of UNESCO ’s Member States based on the recommendations of an international jury of education experts.
The award was established in 2005 with the support of the Kingdom of Bahrain. It recognizes individuals and organizations that use digital technology to improve teaching, learning, and overall educational performance. Two winners are selected each year. In addition to the $ 25,000 prize, the award is also an international recognition of the winners ’innovative use of digital technology in the field of education.
The winners will introduce their winning projects at the seminars held around the award ceremony. The specific date of this year's award ceremony has not yet been determined
