The Minister of National Education in charge of civic training and the Representative of UNESCO in Gabon signed this morning an agreement in trust funds, of 195 955 United States dollars, for technical assistance in the establishment of a Distance Education System in Gabon in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

This agreement concerns UNESCO technical assistance in two phases: the establishment of an emergency solution to ensure educational continuity for pupils in examination classes and the consolidation of prior learning and '' an online education system for primary, general secondary, technical and vocational secondary.

Indeed, the coronavirus pandemic has created a global health crisis that has pushed governments to close schools at all levels. These closures currently affect around 70% of all learners worldwide. Because of this exceptional situation, UNESCO launched a "World Coalition for Education (https://en.unesco.org/covid19/educationglobalcoalition)". It aims to foster inclusive learning opportunities for children and young people in this period of sudden and unprecedented educational disruption.

Through this coalition, "UNESCO brings together all existing experiences and mobilizes public and private partners. Also, thanks to the expertise of its headquarters as well as its regional and national offices, it already supports several countries for educational continuity, "said Vincenzo Fazzino.

Without waiting for the signature of the agreement with Gabon, the Organization immediately made available to the Ministry of Education, all the courses produced and put online, in 2017/2018, as part of the Former project. My Generation - Gabon 5000 (Train My Generation - Gabon 5000, in English) on the basis of the Avicenna Virtual Campus model, for educational continuity in the country. These were courses in mathematics, life and earth sciences and physics-chemistry for the third and final grades. Then, last April, it trained 60 elementary and secondary pedagogical supervisors in the production of online courses to support the National School’s home school project launched on April 14.

In addition, "this crisis is making the world of education more armed. It offers a new opportunity to make up for certain shortcomings already plaguing the education system by providing solutions in the short and medium term, ”added Mr. Fazzino. He ended his remarks by congratulating Gabon for having seized this opportunity materialized by the signing of this agreement.

Beyond the specific action above, "this agreement will allow the country to have a more resilient distance education system," said Professor Mouguiama-Daouda. "This will allow us to better deal with possible new crises. In addition, it will allow Gabon to have a multi-channel distance education system, according to the UNESCO Avicenna model, that is to say which uses not only the traditional channel, the web, but also channels such as television, radio and paper media. This approach will reach students in areas far from urban centers, especially those who do not have access to a computer or the Internet, he added. "
