The Quantitative Ethnography Masterclass Series is designed to help researchers in learning analytics, policy analysis, and the social sciences more generally learn about quantitative ethnography. This Masterclass is in the form of lectures, workshops, hands-on work groups, and one-on-one consulting, which is open to graduate students, postgraduate scholars, and faculty members.

Day 1 AM: Talk: Quantitative Ethnography

9:30 am – 11:30 am,Mon-23th, Oct

Jingshi Hall, Beijing Normal University

David Williamson Shaffer looks at the transformation of the social sciences in the age of Big Data to go beyond the old dichotomy of qualitative and quantitative methods and past simple mixtures of methods in data analysis.

Special guest: Prof. Chen Li and Prof. Zhang Jingjing will present an empirical study about collaborative programming using QE methods.

Day 1 PM: Workshop: Methods, Tools, and Current Practices in QE

2:00 pm – 4:30 pm,Mon-23th, Oct

1515 Meeting Room, 15F, Block A, Jingshi Technology Building

This workshop introduces participants to an automated coding tool, Codey, and a network analysis technique, Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA). With hands-on experience with tools, this workshop will scaffold participants to make their first ENA model during the workshop.

Day 2 AM: Work Groups: How to Apply QE

9:30 am – 12pm,Tue-24th, Oct

1515 Meeting Room, 15F, Block A, Jingshi Technology Building

This workshop is designed to facilitate participants with different level of QE skills. Participants will be grouped by research interests and have an interactive session with mentors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Day 2 PM: One-on-One Consulting

2:00 pm – 4:30 pm,Tue-24th, Oct

1515 Meeting Room, 15F, Block A, Jingshi Technology Building
