How should the performance be assessed that students achieve when studying at home? The Senate Education Administration is now making specifications for this. (SYLVIA VOGT)

On Monday the tenth graders will return to schools , a week later the sixth graders, the ninth graders at secondary schools and all those who graduate from high school next year will follow. But there is still no guaranteed return date for the other grades. It can be doubted that all classes will find their way back to regular school operations this school year .

But what about grading in the second half of school? When the schools were closed in mid-March, there were only a few weeks in the second half of the year and only a few papers were written.
The education administration has now written a letter to the schools on these questions, which is available to the Tagesspiegel. Among other things, it states that the pandemic should have no school disadvantages for schoolchildren .
In the letter, specifications are made for the performance evaluation of the 11th grades at secondary and vocational schools, for the secondary level I and the primary level.

Students should be able to improve but not deteriorate

For students up to grade 10, tasks that are processed at home could be included in an assessment, but it should be noted that students should only improve and not deteriorate compared to the first half of the year. Teachers should tell students that additional project work could improve their performance.
Also with students in class 11, it should be ensured that good performances have a positive effect on the grading and that deteriorations are only the exception.
If the performance is worse than usual, the current general conditions should be taken into account and it should be taken into account that the learning conditions at home are very different. The letter also points out that the number of written papers can be reduced. When deciding whether a child will pass the probationary year at high school, the schools should make a generous decision or postpone the decision to the next year.
