Berlin's teachers cannot use many established video conference providers. They must meet rigid data protection standards. That should scare a lot of people. By Felix Hackenbruch.

Otherwise, the school senator goes ahead in the otherwise rather reserved Senate. Contrary to what the Chancellor recommends, Scheeres does not want to open the schools on May 4th, but gradually from April 27th. On the one hand to carry out the - as critics say dispensable - MSA exams of the tenth grade, on the other hand because homeschooling does not work.

A letter from the school administration to the teaching staff explains why this is to explain the use of video conferences. Use a recommended service provider? Not with the Berlin administration. Instead, a "checklist" for "important criteria when choosing a video conference service". We check:

- The service provider has its headquarters AND data center in the EU
- The service provider guarantees data security
- The service provider has data protection-friendly default settings (participation possible without an individual account; conversations are not saved; data is deleted after 48 hours; transmission is encrypted)

Check, check, check! So now in the video chat? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! According to the will of the school administration, it is only really starting for teachers: "Instructions for implementation":

- "Ask the provider about a contract for order processing"
- "The process must be documented with its key data in accordance with the GDPR"
- Make participants aware of "prudent use"
- Inform students AND parents of the data protection declaration and consent

By then at the latest, 45 minutes of lessons should be over and even IT teachers can look forward to the reopening of the analog school.
