Huang Ronghuai, Dean of the Smart Learning Institute of Beijing Normal University, shared how to carry out flexible teaching during the anti-pandemic period in the education session on April 9.

First of all, Dean Huang introduced the rapid response and action plan made by the Ministry of Education in the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak, which ensured the safety of students and continuity of their study at home. For example, in early February, the Ministry of Education launched the initiative of “Disrupted Classes, Undisrupted Learning” which provides more than 270 million students with flexible online learning. At the same time, the Ministry of Education issued a new policy on supporting education with ICT during the period of the prevention and control of the pandemic that suggests the following measures: improving network support conditions, enhancing platform service capabilities, pooling resources from all sectors of society, adopting appropriate teaching methods, optimizing education management services, and strengthening network security.

The initiative of “Disrupted Classes, Undisrupted Learning” is actually one of the largest online teaching practices -- offering flexible teaching, on-demand learning and open educational resources. In addition, it requires government leadership, school management, home-school cooperation, and the participation of the whole society.

In addition, he explained that flexible teaching was a learner-centered teaching strategy which promotes “3E” learning, namely “Easy learning”, “Engaged learning” and “Effective learning”.

1. Ensuring reliable network infrastructure;
2. Utilizing friendly learning tools;
3. Providing interactive suitable digital learning resources;
4. Guiding learners to apply effective learning methods;
5. Using effective methods to organize instruction;
6. Providing instant support services for teachers and learners;
7. Empowering the partnership between governments, enterprises and schools.
